Take a slow drive between Hartbeespoort and Rustenburg along the “citrus belt” on the northern side of the Magaliesberg mountain range. Here you can enjoy Route 104 which is the first leg of the Buffelspoort Valley Meander.
Then take a short left towards the Buffelspoort Dam and visit the interesting farm stalls and exciting holiday getaways. The drive takes one along the Kromrivier Road towards Olifantsnek Dam reaching the micro-brewery, the Brauhaus am Damm at the Olifantsnek Dam. Drive back towards Rustenburg and into the historic town of Kroondal, which is the second leg of the Buffelspoort Valley Meander.
The mountains, which are 100 times older than Mount Everest, tell the story of mankind dating back 2 300 million years. The area is one of great diversity and historically was once the scene of a battlefield between the British and the Boers in the year 1900.
Today Buffelspoort Valley boasts numerous holiday resorts, game lodges and wildlife sanctuaries. One can simply take in the awesome scenery of the majestic mountain range fringed with its sunny citrus orchards towards the crystal clear pools of the Mountain Sanctuary Park, or for the more adventurous, go absailing, rock climbing, or do the Magaliesberg Canopy Tour at Ysterhout Kloof. There are game drives at Kumbagana Game Lodge. Relax at one of the spas, such as the Sparkling Health Spa at Sparkling Waters Hotel, Pamperlang Salon at Buffelspoort ATKV or Hunters Rest Wellness Centre along the route.
The Buffelspoort Dam, one of the cleanest stretches of water in the country, allows one to spend a day boating or fishing. The dam hosts a number of triathlons during the year, as well as gruelling mountainbiking races along the mountain range.
Along Route 104 you can visit the Bosveld Pub & Grub and enjoy “lekker boerekos” in an authentic “ou huis” setting. A little further down the road you’ll find Harley’s Family Pub & Restaurant with a kiddies play park, where wild buck roam right up to the pool and restaurant area.
Visit the Mooinooi Golf Club, a perfect breakfast or dinner venue for a relaxed break. The Buffelspoort ATKV holiday resort has recently opened its restaurant to day visitors. And Sparkling Waters Hotel & Spa is famous for their delicious Sunday buffets. On weekend nights one can enjoy live music at Buffalo Grill and Broers Pub.
Enjoy a great meal and beer at the Brauhaus am Damm, a micro-brewery on the shores of the Olifanstnek Dam along the R24.
Delight in the valley’s home industry and small businesses. Pop into Kumquat Gift Shop just opposite ATKV for a great cup of coffee and a look around. One of the oldest farm stalls in the valley, stocked with every kind of jam and relish, it is an ideal place to find a gift for someone special back in the city.
