There are two major German events that take place annually.

The Kroondaler Carnival (German Beer fest) at the end of April beginning of May and the first Saturday of the June/July School holiday.
The Carnival is organized on the same line of working together and is a well known event organized as a massive beer garden, where people come together, dance to the sound of an ‘umpah’ band.  The proceeds are to the advantage of school and community projects.

image courtesey of platinum weeklyThe Kroondal Bazaar, where real traditional pork and beef are for sale and exceptional food stalls. The annual Bazaar is an important date on the event calendar. In Preparation people come together at 4am and work till midday on 4 different days to produce delicacies based on old Kroondal recipes.   During these work sessions about 60 pigs and 1800 kg of beef is transformed into sausages, kassler, brawn. Most of these products are sold within 30 minutes on the day of the bazaar. Also sold are homemade bread and cakes and other things and everybody enjoys the day in the tea and beer garden. The proceeds are for the church and community projects. It is jointly organized between the school and the congregation. The church supports a library and an old age home in Kroondal.

The Kroondalers have always seen themselves as part of the Rustenburg rural community with the South African culture and love for this country.  They are proud of their German heritage and tradition. They classify themselves as German speaking South Africans. Both annual festivals the Bazaar and the Beerfest is open to the public.

Mining in Kroondal

Kroondal is primarily an underground operation, with openpit operation slowly tailing off. With both reefs and the parting being mined, this has resulted in a wide-reef operation underground. Blasting control creates large waste rocks in the parting zone, of which a large proportion are removed underground to improve the economics of the operation. Openpit (20%) and underground (80%). Main product Platinum.
